western maryland looking at rain. it will move across the immediate metro region the next hour or so, already have flood watches to the north and west. including frederick county, the panhandle of western maryland and west virginia. nothing for the immediate metro, but i have a feeling this will change through the day tomorrow. heavy rain sunday, could be 1-2 inches. a look at the extended outlook coming up. 24 hours after he was caught, the suspected serial rapist is hospitalized. the police say he tried to take his own life. richard reeve is following the latest. >> police sources confirmed the suspect tried to hang himself in his jail cell. he is undergoing mental

attacks, including 12 rapes between 1997 and 2009. >> the dna was matched by the forensics lab, confirming that thomas was the east coast rapist. >> one case involved in 18 year- old woman raped in these woods in 2000. >> i don't feel very safe. >> the police say aaron thomas is an unemployed truck driver. reports say that his girlfriend is devastated. she had no idea about the wrongdoing. he is scheduled to be arraigned on sex assault and other charges monday, but now that could change. richard reeve, abc 7 news. loved ones are speaking out after a crash takes the life of a maryland teenager. the driver involved could face

charges. john gonzalez is live in the hyattsville with the family and friends. >> very sad, the teenager was studying to become a registered nurse. she studied in new york, but tonight the family and friends in hyattsville of trying to make sense of what happened early this morning, the crash so violent that she'd and a eight -- that she was ejected from the car. 19-year-old kiana thomas was traveling with a friend on piscataway road. the police say just after midnight, the driver of another vehicle ran the stop sign and struck the passenger side of the small vehicle the three girls were in. >> another innocent life taken. my niece is also fighting for her life. >> tonight, evidence of the

deadly accident are scattered. a tire marks on the ground, and a broken fence. glass is everywhere, and had light thrown several feet from the impact. >> it happened so quick. we were hanging out with each other. >> she was in the backseat. she died a short time later in hospital. her 19 year-old cousin who is pregnant is still in critical condition. >> she was very helpful. she would go out of her way to make you happy. >> the unborn baby is being monitored very closely. at the driver of the other car and passenger were treated for minor injuries this afternoon. it charges are pending, perhaps against the driver. the police believe alcohol may have played a factor. john gonzalez, abc 7 news. striking nurses were

picketing at side of the washington hospital center for a second straight day. about one-third of the nursing staff walked off the job yesterday and the hospital brought in temporary workers to replace them. the striking nurses cannot return until next week. they have been working without a new contract since last june. new developments in a trout of a maryland man. the drought is over, -- the trial is over, but there is no word on when the verdict may come. he's accused of trying to undermine the cuban government. prosecutors say he faces 20 years in prison. the u.s. government is demanding his immediate release. the nation is on storm watch, severe weather slamming much of the country.

at one point tonight, there were flood watches and warnings in 20 states. in the louisiana, a tornado tore through. the twisters and downed power lines and destroyed dozens of homes. natural gas leaks forced more than 1000 to evacuate. tonight, the police are going door to door. flooding created major traffic problems. drivers in indianapolis, heavy rain leaving 2 feet of standing water, turning roadways into reverse. some made it, others were stranded. the battle for control rages in libya. rebel fighters are clashing in the streets with forces from the government credit for the civilians trying to escape, it is dangerous.

the tug of war continues. forces loyal to gaddafi tried but failed to take over ricky oil town. rebels hoisted the flag symbolic of their movement. just outside of tripoli, there are reports of increased violence from government forces as they try to recapture the town. trying to leave libya is becoming more difficult. libyan forces have increased their presence on the tunisian border, blocking people trying to leave the country. tens of thousands of displaced foreign workers are stranded at border camps. two u.s. cargo planes brought water and blankets to refugees. the red cross says it needs more help. >> we need airplanes to bring these people back home. >> the united nations estimates

200,000 people have left the country so far. no end in sight to the rising gas prices. at the national average, $3.38 per gallon. gas is already selling near $4 per gallon in the d.c. region. the rising fuel prices also affecting their plane fares. it is not easy on metro this weekend. passengers are dealing with closures and delays while crews complete major track work. five stations on the orange line between stadium armory and new carrollton are closed, a portion of the blue line between stadium armory and benning road are closed. metro says that passengers should add 15-20 minutes to their commutes. >> i did not know it was closed until i got to the station.

the police want anyone with information to call. the truck driver in custody after a deadly hit and run just before 10:00 last night on pennsylvania avenue. the police say the driver of a ford truck was changing lanes when he struck and killed a person. the truck driver fled the scene but was tracked down by the police. there is no crosswalk in that area. the police said the investigation is ongoing. familiar faces showing their support for protesters in wisconsin. filmmaker michael moore urged demonstrators to fight republican attempts to cut state workers. of the protests are in their third straight week. in chicago, the rev. jesse jackson also showed up and support of the wisconsin state workers. teacher stormed the capital, because they did not
